Man arrested after 13-year-old shot in head while hunting
OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 62-year-old Jenison man has been arrested following the death of a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head while hunting.
Roger Hoeker was arrested for involuntary manslaughter in connection to the incident that took place back on Feb. 18.
It happened just before 4 p.m. on state land on the southeast side of Oceana County.
According to Michigan State Police, William "Billy" Gort Jr. was on a hunting trip with another teenage friend and Hoeker, who is a mentor with a youth outreach program called Christianity Outdoors. We are told Hoeker was also a Michigan hunter safety instructor.
The teen hunters were squirrel hunting with shotguns and Hoeker was hunting was a small caliber rifle.
During this hunting trip, state police say Hoeker discharged his rifle where Billy was hit in the head and died from his injuries.
State Police note that orange hunter safety attire was being worn at the time of the shooting.
