A federal judge sentenced a man to life in prison for sexually assaulting and murdering his 3-month old daughter on a northern Michigan Indian Reservation.
A Grand Rapids jury convicted Steven Deuman in September in the 2011 death of his daughter.
The girl died in Peshawbestown, on the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indian Reservation.
An autopsy found she was asphyxiated by an artificial blockage in her airways.
Deuman allegedly told investigators that the girl fell off of a bed and accidentally choked on a discarded condom. But a forensic pathologist for the FBI said Deuman's version of the story did not add up. The FBI alleged Deuman killed the girl during a penetration, or attempted penetration of aggravated sexual abuse.
Federal authorities investigated the death because it occurred on tribal lands.
