Man drowns in Lake Michigan
An Ohio man is dead after he disappeared in rough water in Benzie County.
Rescue crews were called to Peterson Beach in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Sunday around 4:40pm after the swimmer, Kevin Schlake, disappeared. After a search of the water a National Park Ranger found the 40-year-old in about 5 feet of water. CPR was performed at the beach but he was pronounced dead once he arrived at the hospital.
Kevin and his family had just begun a weeklong vacation at Platte Lake. On Sunday, Kevin and his brother-in-law were swimming in Lake Michigan with their two nephews, when Kevin's brother-in-law realized they were caught in a rip current.
The brother-in-law was able to throw one nephew out of the current, and that child swam to shore. After rescuing his nephew, the brother-in-law began swallowing water and went under. He was soon spit out of the rip current and two men were able to drag him to shore.
At the same time, the other nephew was being pulled under by the rip tide. Kevin pulled him out and threw him to safety. That child was helped to shore, but Kevin was pulled under water where he was overcome by the current.
Some 30 minutes later, his body was recovered in the waves, approximately 60 feet offshore. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At the time of the drowning, Lake Michigan had 3-5 foot waves.
