Sheriff: Man injured after crashing into tree

A man was injured in a crash with tree in Mecosta County.

MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A man said a coughing fit caused a crash with a tree in Martiny Township.

Around 5:37 p.m. Wednesday the Mecosta County Sheriff's Department responded to a crash on 110th Avenue just south of 15 Mile Road.

The 63-year-old driver left the road and drove about one-tenth of a mile through a field before hitting a tree and stopping, according to deputies.

The driver told deputies he passed out from a coughing spell and didn't remember the crash, deputies said.

The man was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to deputies, alcohol is believed to be a factor.
