Man serving time in prison for assault commits suicide
An inmate serving prison time for an Ogemaw County attempted murder is dead from an apparent suicide.
Prison officials report Derek Allen, 30, committed suicide at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia County just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Allen was charged with attempted murder for shooting at a home in Ogemaw County's Mills Township in November, 2012. One person was injured in the shooting.
Allen pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit murder and was given a sentence of 9 to 30 years in prison in December, 2013.
