Man with samurai swords arrested outside sheriff's office
MASON COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Mason County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man after surveillance video showed him wandering outside the sheriff's department with a samurai sword.
Rickey Wilson, 22, was arrested Saturday for carrying a concealed weapon.
Surveillance video shows Wilson in a black trenchcoat shaking hands with the statue near the front door of the building several times, then hiding behind it when a car drove past.
Deputies approached the man and took him into custody.
They found a 26-inch samurai sword on his back, and several other knives in his backpack including a 19-inch blade.
The sheriff says he’s glad no one was hurt and the situation was handled properly by his deputies.
The sheriff says Wilson told them he was going to turn the weapons into the police.
“We’re in a day in age where people are attacking, ambushing officers.... I don’t know that that was his motive," said Sheriff Kim Cole. "I think it’s clear you just don’t walk up to a law enforcement office with a sword and hide behind a statue when a motorist passes to simply to turn the item over the police it just simply makes no sense."
Wilson faces up to five years in prison.
