Medical care facility, commission agree on plan to repay taxpayers

The Maples Medical Care Facility asked for nearly $500,000 of taxpayer money to solve a cash flow problem that came up late last year.

Benzie County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a contract that will set payment deadlines for the county owned Maples Medical Care Facility.

The facility asked for nearly $500,000 of taxpayer money to solve a cash flow problem that came up late last year.

The Maples Medical Care Facility has already paid back $200,000 and will owe the county another $284,000 by January 2014.

Judy Martin is the administrator for the Maples Medical Care Facility and tells 7&4 News that with the contract approved and initial construction underway for a new facility, things are looking up.

â??There's been a lot of work done in the last couple months, along with the treasurer and the commissioners to reach this point todayâ?¦ they're very excited about the new building; the groundbreaking. The residents are very happy... they can hear the chippers going and the trees are coming down and it's a very positive time for the facility.â??

The commission approved the contract seven to zero.

The contract will include cash flow assistance up to $200,000, if needed, until January 2016.
