A search for a missing 2-year-old Grand Haven boy came to a tragic end at Lake Mitchell Monday evening.
The first calls to 911 came in just before 5:30 pm, reporting that the child, Arend Wagasky, was missing from Quail Court, near West Lake Mitchell Drive.
A few minutes later, a second call to 911 stated that Wagasky had been found in the water, that he had a pulse, but was not breathing and that CPR was being performed.
According to the Wexford County Sheriff's Department, the mother of the child went inside to feed another infant, leaving the 2-year-old with a 7-year-old and a 12-year-old on the shore.
Officials say the 7-year-old "created a distraction in the water" and then 12-year-old went to check on him, losing track of the 2-year-old.
Sheriff's officials believe the mother was inside for about 20 minutes. Wagasky was found floating in the water.
Emergency crews arrived, and took Wagasky to Mercy Hospital where he died a short time later. According to the Wexford County Sheriff's office, the family is from the Grand Haven area. They were spending time at a summer home at the time of the incident.
The investigation remains underway.
