Mitten tree helps those in need stay warm this holiday season

People are encouraged to come in and place new mittens, gloves, hats or scarves on the unique Christmas tree.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- If you're looking for a way to help those in need this holiday season, the mitten tree at the Traverse City Senior Center could use more decorations.

People are encouraged to come in and place new mittens, gloves, hats or scarves on the unique Christmas tree.

All the items will be donated to the Street Outreach Program with the Goodwill Inn.

The Senior Center has been doing this for five years, and say some people will knit all year long just for the mitten tree.

“They'll come in with a bag of 40 scarves and it's so cool because they're thinking about it all year and they're saving all of their stuff for it and you know they really like to come in and put it on the tree and see that it's going to help somebody in need,” said program coordinator Ericca Hovie.

In 5 years, they've collected nearly 900 items, so they're hoping to break the one thousand mark this year.

People can drop off donations through the end of the month.

You can also donate cash which will be used to buy more winter items.
