Michigan State Police have arrested an 18-year-old Illinois woman and charged her with open murder.
Alyce Morales of Cicero, Illinois is accused of killing her newborn daughter, Marie Morales, after giving birth at a Benzie County campsite Monday.
Investigators say Morales had been hiding her pregnancy from her parents and gave birth alone while vacationing with relatives at the Platte River Campground in Honor.
"Right now we have no other suspects for this case," said Trooper Rich Hall, Michigan State Police. "She did hide the pregnancy from her parents and gave birth to the child in the tent at the campground."
Emergency crews were called to the campground by relatives, and took the child to Munson Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on Tuesday. State Police say an autopsy revealed that the infant had been murdered. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.
"To try to prevent something like this, I think maybe I don't know the relationship, but have a more open relationship with your children and hopefully they disclose this kind of information so you can guide them through whether you think it's a mistake or a blessing," said Hall.
State Police report that the relatives Morales was vacationing with were unfortunately not aware that she was pregnant before she gave birth.
Morales is being held at the Benzie County Jail where the judge denied any bond.
