Munson Healthcare Urgent Care Center opens in Cadillac

The urgent care facility is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital opened a new urgent care center in Cadillac this week.

The new Munson Healthcare Urgent Care center is now located across the street from the hospital’s emergency room entrance.

“I think this is critical to the community, we're seeing a growth in urgent cares across the country,” said Jeremy Carlson, the manager of the Emergency Services Department of Munson Healthcare Cadillac. “There is an increased volume in emergency departments because patients didn’t have anywhere else to go.”

The plans and construction of the building have been in the works for a year. The facility has eight exam rooms.

Representatives with the hospital encourage patients to see their primary care doctor first for non-emergent needs, but when their doctor’s office is closed or an appointment is not available, urgent care is available.

“Our hope for over here is to try and relieve a lot of the stress the ER is feeling and give Cadillac another option for healthcare when they need someone and their doctors can’t get them in or or they don’t have a primary care physician," said Ashleigh Butler, an emergency room technician. “We’re hopefully going to take some of the load off things that aren’t so emergent.”

Butler says the new center can help reduce wait time for patients needing attention in the emergency room.

“In the ER everything is triage so it’s not first come first serve, it's whoever is sicker is going to be seen first,” Butler said. “Whereas here we don’t really triage, its more of a you’re seen when you come in.”

Healthcare providers there say in the first two days that they’ve been open, they’ve seen more than two dozen patients.

They say any patients experiencing health issues such as back or muscle strains, bladder infections, coughs and sinus problems, mild burns, sore throats, nausea or vomiting, pink eye, and other non-life threatening conditions should see a provider at the Urgent Care Center.

“There’s such a tremendous need for the community access to care is such a challenging issue that every community is struggling with and also the cost of care,” Carlson said. “We’re really trying to drive down the cost of care that patients receive so that’s our goal.”

The urgent care facility is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
