There are some new additions to the Leelanau County K-9 team. It's not another dog, but a device that will help keep them safe. The Grand Traverse Kennel Club donated a heat sensor device.
This device automatically notifies the team's K-9 handler when the temperature rises to a dangerous level inside the vehicle.
"I think it's a police concern now. It's unfortunate there's been dogs that have passed away due to heat exhaustion in the car and this is just another tool that helps us to help them," says Greg Hornkoh, Leelanau County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's can also open the doors of the K-9 vehicles using a separate tool they keep with them.
