A new race open to all ages kicks off August 24 in Leelanau County.
The Vineyard to Bay race will not only benefit runners but the Suttons Bay Schools as well.
Vineyard to Bay is a 25K race and a non-competitive 5K walk.
This race was started by two retired teachers who moved up to Suttons Bay and decided they wanted to do something to benefit the community.
All proceeds will benefit Suttons Bay Schools as well as the Leelanau TART Trail.
Money raised from the 5K event will go towards the school, and proceeds for the 25K are being split between the TART Trail and school.
The 25K race will start at Brengman Brothers Vineyard and the 5K walk starts up by Black Star Farms.
More than a dozen teachers will be walking Sunday and several students will help throughout the race.
â??It's been a wonderful way to bring everybody together, and it's a really neat experience for our kids,â?? says school board member Cindy Opie. â??We've got kids that are working the water stations, some of our athletes and robotics team are going to be passing out water to the runner, so everybody's just working together to make it a great community event,â?? says Opie.
So far more than 200 people have signed up for the race.
Organizers told me they hope this becomes an annual event and are hoping to raise more than $4,000 for the schools.
If you want to sign up for this race you can still do so on Saturday at the Black Star Farms from 4-7 p.m. or the morning of the race at both starting points.
The 5K starting point is at 7 a.m. on Pathways Rd. and Revold Rd. at the Pathways barn.
The 25K start is just north of the Crain Hill Rd. /Center Rd. intersection.
