Brand new tennis center opens in Otsego County
OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Thursday afternoon was the grand opening of the brand new Otsego County Sportsplex Tennis Center.
Four brand new USTA standard tennis courts are now open next to the Otsego County Sportsplex.
The courts were dedicated to Dr. Michael J. Moir, a Gaylord tennis player who died in a plane crash.
It took about five years to raise the $300,000 needed to build the courts.
The courts will be used by the Alpine Regional Tennis Association in, Gaylord High School and will be open to the public.
“This is a life-long sport and an inter-generational sport," said Sheila Simpson, the President of ARTA. "Low-cost, a very healthy activity that can reduce obesity, teach kids some really good skills that can transfer to academics.”
The Alpine Regional Tennis Association says to have regional competitions, it needed four courts in the same place.
The first competition will be in two weeks for the Northern Michigan Tennis Association.
