Over $6k lost by local businesses who fell victim to credit card scam

Three different 7-11 locations, two in Traverse City and one in Petoskey, received phone calls from the scammers who claimed to be from the "Retail Credit Card Service Company."

Three local businesses lost money after falling victim to the recent credit card scam.

Three different 7-11 locations, two in Traverse City and one in Petoskey, received phone calls from the scammers who claimed to be from the "Retail Credit Card Service Company."

The callers claim to be from a service company and says there is a problem with the location's credit card machine. The caller then asks the clerk to test the machine by loading and swiping pre-paid credit cards.

The first location, on Cochlin Street in Traverse City, lost about $500 in December.

Then on April 1, the location on 14th Street in Traverse City was scammed out of nearly $4000. That same day, the location in Petoskey faced the same scam and lost $2000.

Traverse City Police say they have a suspect who is living in Miami.

Anyone who may have been a victim of this scam or has been contacted by the scammers is asked to contact police immediately.
