Passerby uses log to free woman trapped in truck after fatal crash
A passerby took matters into their own hands after coming across a fatal truck crash in Charlevoix County.
The Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office was called to the crash Sunday at 5:51pm in Melrose Township.
Investigators say the pickup truck, driven by 21-year-old Jacob Clute of Petoskey, was heading north on Springbrook Road when he lost control and hit a tree. He was able to free the truck from the ditch after the crash and continued on Springbrook Road. A short time later Clute again lost control of the truck and crashed into a ditch, overturning the truck onto the driver's side. Clute was partially ejected from the truck and was trapped underneath the vehicle.
Clute died from his injuries.
Caryssa Rouser, 22, from Boyne City, was a passenger in the truck. Rouser was trapped inside the cab after the crash. A passerby was able to break out the rear window with a log and rescue Rouser. She was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
