The Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office is warning of a phone scam that claims to be from the Social Security Administration.
Sheriff Don Schneider says the caller identifies themselves as the S.S.A and says they will be visiting the person at their home. They proceed to ask the person for their social security and account numbers.
Sheriff Schneider says he believes the only reason the caller says they will make a home visit is to make the call seem legitimate. Officials say no visits have been attempted at this time.
The Social Security Administration does not phone individuals, officials say.
The Sheriff's Office is also warning of a scam from Medic Alert that says someone in your home may have fallen recently and requested emergency alert phone system to be installed. It says the system has already been paid for, but it must be installed. It asks you to verify information then press 1 for installation.
The Sheriff's Office is asking residents to hang up and not to press 1 or give out any information.
