Popular bike route set to change in Charlevoix
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A popular bike route that runs through Downtown Charlevoix could be seeing some changes that will help keep cyclists safe.
Bike Route 35 runs along US-31 North and South of Charlevoix but that could change after a new proposed route was recently submitted to MDOT.
The new route going north would start at Bridge Street and Dixon Avenue, eventually leading to Petoskey Avenue and Mercer Boulevard.
The southbound route would cover Little Traverse Wheelway to Waller Road leading to Michigan Avenue and Bridge Street.
"Biking in northern Michigan is continuing to be a growing attraction for people both who live here and who enjoy the quality of life that it has to offer and also people who are enjoying a weekend or sometime here," said Mark Heydlauff, Charlevoix City Manager. "So that's certainly a factor in it we just think that this is a good way to for the publicize the bike route and help people be as safe as possible."
Charlevoix and MDOT hope this will promote bicycle safety and bring in more to tourism for cycling in Charlevoix.
Once MDOT approves the project, they will remove the old bike route signs and re-sign the new route.
