Protect your home for one dollar
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Millions of homes get burglarized in the United States each year, that's according to ASecureLife.com.
More than 1/3 of the time the crook breaks in through the front door. That's a trend that costs Americans billions of dollars annually.
It turns out most doors in a standard home are not very secure.
Brian Houghton with Builders First Choice said typically doors come with a strike plate held by screws that about a half inch long.
By switching out those small screws with 3 inch stainless steel ones, it can help better protect your home.
Buying two 3 inch screws will cost you about $1 and takes virtually no time to install to your lockset.
"You take two screws out and put two screws in. However long that takes you that's it," said Houghton. "It's really that simple and that quick."
We put it to the test. Without much effort we kicked open a door that wasn't equipped with the 3 inch screws.
It took one kick and sent the strike plate flying.
We also tested out the method with the longer screws and the results were much different.
We gave the door several kicks and it was able to hold in place.
Houghton said the original screws don't reach far enough into the door frame.
"[The 3 inch] screws actually go into the framing around the door and helps make the door a lot more secure," said Houghton.
Accroding to ASecureLife.com, most burglaries happen while you are at work.
Which is why its so important to make sure your house is protected even when no one is home.
Houghton said there are several different things you can do to better protect your home, but they can get expensive.
"Even with the lockset that's probably 25 years old it actually worked well," said Houghton.
