Public meeting being held to hear new Enbridge Line 5 anchor proposal
MACKINAW CITY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A public meeting will be held Wednesday regarding the permit request for Enbridge's Line 5.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality meeting comes after Enbridge requested the permit to install 48 new anchor supports for the controversial pipeline after a tugboat anchor struck and dented Line 5 in the Straits.
Approving these new anchors would bring the total number of anchors to 198 authorized by the state along Line 5, which would change the pipeline's basic design.
Critics said the new anchor supports have damaged the protective coating around the pipelines, which could make it more unstable.
The public meeting will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mackinaw Public Schools in Mackinaw City.
