      Resorts surprised by 'perfect' start to ski season

      A majority of the ski resorts in northern Michigan have opened their doors for the season.

      W hile many people flocked to the stores for Black Friday deals, others decided to spend their time at the slopes.

      S kiers and snowboarders of all ages were just happy to put on their gear , hop on a lift, and go gliding down the slopes.

      " It's kind of exhilarating just getting the f ee l of coming down the mountain with the cold wind in your face," Nicholas Mallett, snowboarder said.

      T his holiday weekend kicks off the ski i ng season for resorts throughout northern Michigan. Fortunately for them, Mother Nature has provided the conditions for a strong start.

      " The snow crews have just been pumping like crazy," Jim Bartlett, Nub's Nob General Manager said. "Conditions right now are as good as they would be in mid February and that's really surprising because it's only the end of November."

      T his allows Michigan resorts to be competitive with resorts in other states all winter long.

      " You know we are able to compete with every one of the western resorts, you know you can just drive north from your home," Brad Keen, Boyne Highlands General Manager said.

      I f the slopes draw large crowds throughout the season that will likely mean a boost for local business. Each year, winter travel accounts for nearly one third of Michigan's 17.8 billion dollar a year travel industry.

      " It's a super way to kick off the season not just only for the resorts , but for the hotels and restaurants ," Bartlett said. "I t just gives a jump start to the winter economy ."
