A man has been taken into custody after a standoff situation in Presque Isle County.
The 29-year-old man came out of the house with his hands on his head, walking backwards just after 9 a.m. He got on his knees and was then taken into custody.
According to Sgt. John Kasuba of the Presque Isle County Sheriff's Department, dispatch received a call about a domestic violence issue between the man and his girlfriend at her home around 1:23 a.m. The suspect then reportedly left his girlfriend's home and went to the other home on M-33 where the standoff took place.
Kasuba said authorities proceeded with caution because they believed the man to be drunk and witnesses had reported hearing gun shots inside the home. Investigators have not been able to confirm that there were in fact any gun shots.
Onaway Community Schools, Presque Isle Academy and Onaway Headstart are closed Tuesday due to the standoff in a home nearby the school.
Authorities are currently searching the home for possible weapons and ammunition.
The suspect's name will not be released until he is arraigned, which could take place Tuesday or Wednesday. Deputies said he had no criminal background.
A section of M-33 running through Onaway is blocked off and deputies are surrounding the area.
