Sheriff: Father tells 911 that his "son did it" following Traverse City murder
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WBPN/WGTU) -- We now know the name of the 23-year-old man who is facing open murder charges after deputies say his dad called 911 to report a dead body inside a Traverse City home.
Central Dispatch got a 911 call around 7:35 a.m. Wednesday that there was a deceased man at 1531 David Place.
The caller, a 49-year-old resident of David Place, told Central Dispatch that his "son did it" and that "he told his girlfriend he killed him." The caller identified his son as Dallas Walker, according to the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say they responded to the scene and found the deceased man, who deputies believe is Christopher Kleehammer. We are told he is the only resident of 1531 David Place.
Around the same time, deputies made contact with the suspect, 23-year-old Walker, who was walking on David Place.
Walker was detained and put into a patrol vehicle. Walker was then taken to Munson Medical Center for evaluation.
Search warrants were sought for the victim and the suspect's homes. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab processed both scenes until late into the night on Wednesday. Those homes are still be protected as of Thursday afternoon.
Preliminary investigation is showing that Walker and Kleehammer know each other as neighbors and acquaintances.
Deputies say at some point after 2 a.m., Walker went to Kleehammer's house. Around 7 a.m., Walker was seen back at his home and allegedly made comments to people at his home that led Walker's father to go to Kleehammer's house to check on Kleehammer's welfare.
We're told Walker's father saw Kleehammer dead in his home and returned to his home to call 911.
Deputies say Kleehammer had obvious signs of blunt force trauma to the head. Kleehammer was taken to Kalamazoo for an autopsy to positively identify Kleehammer and determine the cause and mechanism of death.
That information is not yet available.
The sheriff's office arrested Walker and took him to jail on open murder charges.
Walker is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.
On Thursday, the prosecutor's office authorized charges of open murder for Dallas Walker associated with the killing of Christopher Kleehammer.
