The Presque Isle County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a new scam through the website Craigslist.
Deputies say the scam starts out when people list items on the site, and are contacted by someone wanting to buy the item.
The suspect will send a check the next day for the item, saying they will have someone pick up the item at a later date.
The sheriff's department says when you receive the check it will be in an envelope with no message.
The scam continues when the suspect calls the victim, asking if they've received the check, which will be higher than the agreed price.
The suspect will ask the victim to send or wire the rest of the money via Western Union.
The sheriff's department says to not cash the check or send money, and asks if anyone has come across this scam to contact a local police agency.
