Sheriff's deputies investigate hit and run

According to a witness, a man was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital.

A suspect in a hit and run that left a Mason County teacher in serious condition is behind bars.

The Mason County Sheriff's Office was called to the hit and run Wednesday around 4 p.m. in the Shop & Save parking lot in Pere Marquette Township, which is just south of Ludington.

Witnesses said the vehicle involved hit Scott Dumas, 50, of Scottville and fled the scene. Dumas was flown to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids where he remains in serious condition.

The car involved in the hit and run was described as a gold colored Buick 4-door. The car was spotted by a Ludington police officer and was pulled over.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of OWI and possession of marijuana. Deputies will be seeking additional charges this morning through the Mason County Prosecutor's Office related to the traffic crash.

Dumas is a 6th grade teacher at Mason County Central Middle School. Counselors will be at the school Thursday to help students and staff.
