The Oceana County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash of a small private helicopter in Oceana County's Grant Township.
According to the Sheriff's Department, a 1962 Brantly 2-seat helicopter crashed on a piece of private property behind 7034 S. 104th Ave in Grant Township.
Deputies said they found the helicopter had landed hard on the landing gear and rolled onto its side while the blades were still turning.
Witnesses told deputies the helicopter was just taking off and was not able to clear a series of trees so it turned back towards the opening. It then lost lift and came back down.
The pilot, Gregory McCabe, 30, of Fruitport, suffered minor injuries including a possible fractured arm. The passenger, Lester Korson, 79, of Rothbury, suffered a possible broken shoulder.
Both were taken to Hackley Hospital for treatment.
Officials from the FAA are expected to be on the scene Friday to investigate.
