Smoke billows from historic skating rink in Wexford County
WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A historic skating rink in Cadillac was destroyed by fire Thursday morning.
The call came in for help around 8:45 a.m. at Skatetricity, which is located at 2592 N Lake Mitchell Drive. The roof of the building caved in around 11 a.m. and flames shot out of the building.
N. Lake Mitchell Drive, which is also W. 13th Street, was shut down for several hours while firefighters battled the blaze.
Half a dozen departments from the area helped put the fire out.
Crews say getting water from outside sources was a challenge, as they poured tens of thousands of gallons on the building for most of the day.
Many Cadillac residents say it's a major loss for the community.
"A lot of the fire fighters have a lot of memories coming here as kids," said Stephen Horvath, with the Selma Township Fire Department. "The place is full on weekends so a lot of memories a lot of people have experienced this building.”
No one was in the building at the time.
The owner says they didn't have insurance and do not plan to rebuild.
Crews are still investigating the cause.
