A rifle stolen from the Towers Shores Motel in Cheboygan County in 1997 has surfaced at a pawn shop in Waterford. Now investigators are trying to piece together what happened during the past 17 years.
The owner reported the rifle was stolen from the back seat of his car during the 1997 deer season. The firearm was entered into the state's Law Enforcement Information Network shortly after the theft, but nothing came of it until recently.
In December of 2013, troopers were contacted by the Waterford Township Police Department and notified that the gun had been pawned at the Mega Pawn store. Investigators were able to confirm that the pawned gun was the same one reported stolen. The person who sold the gun has been identified and now troopers are trying to find out how that person ended up with the firearm.
Troopers are reminding everyone who owns a long gun to always keep the serial number even though it isn't required by law to register long guns. They say it allows them to enter the gun into the database and possibly recover the gun if it is ever stolen.
