Struggle between family members ends in tragedy
Michigan State Police from the Houghton Lake Post responded to a complaint of aggravated assault with a firearm on Friday around 9 p.m. at a home in Garfield Township.
During the investigation troopers determined that a family member with mental health issues had broken into and ambushed his brother and sister-in-law at their home, and attempted to shoot them with a rifle.
Authorities say that after a lengthy struggle between the victims and the suspect, the victims were able to escape their home, flee the area, and call 9-1-1. Troopers then arrived at the residence and secured the perimeter, while waiting for the MSP Emergency Services Team to arrive. The suspect was still believed to be barricaded inside with the rifle, and had made several homicidal and suicidal threats towards family and others.
Authorities then deployed a tactical robot for surveillance and discovered a body of a 58-year-old male on the rear side of the porch with an apparent single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The male was pronounced dead at the scene by Life EMS of Grand Rapids.
Troopers were also assisted at the scene by Kalkaska County Sheriff's deputies and Garfield Township Police. The incident remains under investigation.
