Students and heroes shop for needy children

Students paired up with local heroes to shop for needy children.

Toys for Tots hosted a big shopping spree for needy children on Friday.

The annual Shop With Heroes event pairs students who are doing well in school with local police officers, firefighters and military members.

They spent the day shopping for children in need.

"It's really fun because I know that I feel happy on Christmas morning, and I would like other kids to feel the same way and be happy," Westwoods Elementary Student Anna Bulliss said.

Mike Makowski, with the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department, was impressed by how much care the students put into finding the perfect gifts.

"We've got fairly broad parameter for the toys, and they don't just grab the first thing that comes to mind," Deputy Makowski said. "They've put a lot of thought into it, they'll look at something, look at the age group we're shopping for, and they make good decisions".

Santa Claus was also there, handing out candy canes and taking pictures with the children.
