Suspect turns himself in after armed robbery at gas station, kidnapping clerk
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 23-year-old man is in custody after allegedly robbing a gas station in Sault Ste. Marie and then kidnapping the clerk.
It started around 2:40 a.m. Thursday at the Admiral Gas Station.
According to the Sault Ste. Marie Police, the suspect walked into the gas station and kidnapped the clerk using a replica pistol. He also stole gas, cigarettes and $900 in cash.
The suspect then left with the woman he kidnapped and drove south on I-75 toward the Kinross area.
The police chief says about 20 minutes south near Kinross, the suspect dropped off the clerk at the median turnaround area and then drove off. The woman was able to get to a nearby gas station for help.
The suspect then drove into Canada.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police had a good description of the suspect, because we are told the suspect had previously worked at the Soo gas station, and shared this with the Sault Ontario Police and the Ontario Provincial Police.
Authorities had a good idea where the suspect may be heading.
Around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the suspect called the Sault Police Department and turned himself into the Sault Ontario Police.
The suspect remains behind bars in Canada.
