      Teenager drowns in Grand Traverse County

      The teen who has been identified as 17-year-old Owen Williamson of Traverse City, was swimming with his friends when he became distressed and began to call out for help.

      A 17-year-old Traverse City teenager drowned Friday afternoon while swimming with friends at the Twin Lakes Park on Long Lake Road in Long Lake Township.

      The teen who has been identified as 17-year-old Owen Williamson of Traverse City, was swimming with his friends when he became distressed and began to call out for help. 911 was contacted, with rescue crews from the GT County Sheriff's Office, Northflight, and Long Lake Twp Fire Dept responding to the emergency.

      Witnesses and friends were not able to reach him before he went under the surface of the water. A female friend found the teen and pulled him back up to the surface. Sheriff's Deputies and Rescue crews launched an inflatable boat to the teens and pulled them to shore where emergency life saving efforts were initiated. EMS transported the teen to Munson Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

      An area school principal has been notified to assist with grieving students when school resumes.

      Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Reynolds Jonkoff Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City.
