Teens identified for stealing from multiple boats in Leland Marina
Authorities have identified two suspects accused of stealing from boats docked in the Leland Marina on Friday and Saturday night.
According to the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office, ten different boats have been entered into over a two day period. Most of the items that were stolen have been returned to the owners.
On Sunday, deputies responded to a larceny in process at the marina. The people who reported the crime saw two young males breaking into their boat and had chased the boys off.
According to the sheriff's office, one of the boys jumped into the water to escape and the other boy went off running.
The Sherriff's Office Marine Division, Leland Fire and Rescue as well at the United States Coast Guard conducted an emergency water search for one of the boys.
During the water search, tennis shoes and a sweatshirt were found floating in the water.
Hours later, the search ended when the boy showed up at a friends house and was taken home by a parent.
The friend's parent contacted authorities after seeing the emergency personnel at the Marina.
Deputies were able to identify the two suspects as 15-year-old and 16-year-old males. Both boys are safe and are left in custody of their parents.
The case has been turned over to the prosecutor for review of charges.
