ALPENA, Mich. (AP) - Live music, living history demonstrations and tall ship tours are among the activities and attractions planned at the Thunder Bay Maritime Festival in Michigan's northeastern Lower Peninsula.
Organizers of the festival scheduled for Friday in Alpena say it's designed "to commemorate America's birthday" and the "rich maritime heritage" of Lake Huron's Thunder Bay. The event will be held at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.
Vessels available to tour include the 140-foot Peacemaker and the sea cadet training ship Pride of Michigan. The festival also features a cardboard boat race across the Thunder Bay River.
The festival is presented by the Friends of Thunder Bay and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, one of 14 such sanctuaries in the U.S. and the only one in fresh water.
