Folks gathered Sunday for the 5th annual Traverse Colantha Walker Dairy Festival.
Walker was a world champion dairy cow in the 1920â??s. She produced more than 200 thousand gallons of milk in her 16 year life.
"The idea was about what makes this place special,â?? said Raymond Minervini, a developer of the Grand Traverse Commons. â??It's an old hospital but what's really cool about it is they had a world champion dairy cow. So it's just to celebrate something special.â??
There was food, music, shopping, and several dairy products for sale.
It was a chance to remember the world famous cow, but also an opportunity to highlight the importance of local food.
â??It started a couple years ago, knowing where your food comes from,â?? said Minervini. â??I think everyone's gaining a greater appreciation of why that's important â?| to know the people just down the road or a little bit outside of town who are growing the food that gets put on our table.â??
