Traverse City Commission approves sidewalk cafe changes

City Commissioners approved recommended changes to the city's sidewalk cafe ordinance.

Changes could soon be coming to the Traverse City's sidewalk cafes. Monday night city commissioners approved the changes recommended by an ad hoc committee. The committee was reviewing the city's current rules and regulations regarding sidewalk cafes after the downtown restaurant community expressed interest in expanding their dining offerings beyond their walls.

The changes from the committee include requiring a 5 foot wide travel corridor remains on the sidewalk with a fixed barrier between pedestrians and the business, that individual cafes are responsible for trash, and that each business will operate on a "two strikes and your out" policy according to City Commissioner Jim Caruthers.

Platform cafes were removed from the committee's recommendations and may be discussed in the future.
