Traverse City man charged in Kalamazoo baby's death
A 21-year-old Traverse City man is facing murder charged in the death of a 14-month-old Kalamazoo child in December.
Toren Hains has been charged with open murder, felony murder and first degree child abuse, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department.
Hains was babysitting for his girlfriend's child, Zoie Grace Johnston, at an apartment on 1800 block of S. 11th Street in Oshtemo Township, when he took the child to a nearby apartment to ask for help. He claimed at the time that he had accidentally dropped the child.
The child was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital, but died the next day.
An autopsy revealed the child had a brain injury from trauma "over and above being 'dropped'," according to the Sheriff's Department.
Zoie also had alcohol and THC, a marijuana component, in her system.
Hains is expected back in court on October 31 for a preliminary exam.
