A Traverse City man will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing a Kalamazoo toddler.

Toren Hains, 22, was found guilty of murder and first degree child abuse by a jury in May.

Hains was babysitting his girlfriend's child, Zoie Grace Johnston, in December, 2012 when the injury occurred. Hains said he dropped the toddler.

The child was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital, but died the next day.

An autopsy revealed the child had a brain injury from trauma "over and above being 'dropped'," according to the Sheriff's Department.

Zoie also had alcohol and THC, a marijuana component, in her system.
