A northern Michigan veteran was laid to rest Saturday with full military honors.
23-year-old Marine Corporal Michael Reese served two tours of combat duty in Afghanistan.
He passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday.
Family and friends gathered at Memorial Gardens Saturday where the Patriot Guard was waiting to salute and pay their respects to Corporal Reese and his family.
Those who helped to honor him say itâ??s important that veterans like Corporal Reese are remembered for their service and sacrifice.
â??This is just my way of honoring what it is that they're doing for us. I mean, as somebody that's walked in their shoes, it gives me the opportunity to let them know that I appreciate them, because people did that for me. To come out here and honor a young man for taking the time to protect us means the world to me,â?? said Stephen DeBusschere of the Patriot Guard.
The Reese family requested that people make donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of northern Michigan or the Grand Traverse Area Veterans Coalition.
