Emergency crews were called to Whitewater Township near Williamsburg for a fire that burned 20 acres of land on Friday afternoon.
The fire took place around 3 pm on Elk Lake Rd. near Palaestrum Rd.
The farmer was burring pine brush when the fire got beyond what he could control.
Traverse City Fire, Rural Fire Department, Grand Traverse Metro, Elk Rapids Fire Department, and the DNR out of Kalkaska all helped contain the fire.
Crews were on the scene for about three hours where they controlled the fire to the farmer's property. According to fire officials, it was a 'tremendous effort' to prevent an 80 acre pine wooded area from setting on fire.
The farmer does have a permit to burn.
