Two teenage boys were rescued from an island in Silver Lake after they were stranded when their canoe took on water.
According to Grand Traverse Metro Emergency Services, the teens tried to use a canoe to break through the ice and get to the island. The canoe took on water and began to sink, stranding them on the island.
A neighbor in his kayak went out to make sure they were safe and gave them the shirt and jacket off his back to warm them up.
Rescue crews brought all three people back to safety in a rescue boat.
"A couple of our firefighters had to jump in to get the boat through the ice to the island, so they had to do a little swimming, but they're in ice rescue so everything was fine and we prepare for this,â?? said Assistant Chief Terry Flynn, Grand Traverse Metro Emergency Services Authority.
No one was injured in the incident.
