Upgrades coming for city's downtown tunnel
Traverse City Commissioners gave the go ahead Monday night to improve a tunnel that connects downtown Traverse City to Clinch Park.
The new tunnel near Front and Cass Streets will have heated sidewalks so it can be open year-round.
Other improvements include LED lights, staircase upgrades and wider openings. The City's Planning Commission also wants to use alternative energy to power the project.
we want to offset our energy costs by having a wind turbine and a solar panel array that will help offset some of those costs of heating the sidewalks during the cold year - cold parts of the year and also to provide the lighting to make it a desirable and feeling safe as you travel through the tunnel.
Overall the project will cost about $360,000 dollars.
Commissioners say the improvements to the tunnel are underway and should be completed no later than June.
