Verdict reached in embezzlement trial of former State Trooper

A jury returned a mixed verdict for former State Trooper Malcolm Irwin.

A verdict has been reached in the trial of a former Michigan State Police Sergeant arrested for allegedly stealing from an evidence room.

Malcolm Irwin was charged with embezzling between 1,000 and 20,000 dollars, stemming from an investigation which began back in March of 2014. That's when authorities discovered about 9,600 went missing from the Cadillac State Police Post property room. Irwin was the Sergeant in charge of the evidence room at the time. Since that discovery, two additional financial audits were conducted.

On Friday, a Wexford County Jury deliberated for a little more than an hour before returning it's verdict on Irwin. Irwin was found not guilty of two different embezzlement charges against him, but was found guilty of resisting arrest and a felony firearm charge. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
