Victim's name released in fatal house fire

Deputies say Aleatha Lynn Cox, 66, died after becoming trapped in a house fire.

MASON COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Officials are releasing the name of the woman who died in a house fire in Mason County early Wednesday.

Deputies say Aleatha Lynn Cox, 66, died after becoming trapped in the house.

Crews were called to the 4600 block of South Pere Marquette Highway in Summit Township at 2:04 a.m. Wednesday.

Cox's husband called 911 to report his house was on fire and he was unable to get his wife out. Two Mason County Sheriff's Deputies and a Michigan State Police Trooper were first to arrive and tried to enter the home but were pushed back by intense smoke and heat.

Cox's husband was taken in Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns. His condition is unknown at this time.

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall's Office and detectives from the Mason County Sheriff's Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
