As of 8:30pm, Crews from the City of Manistee had completed the repair work on the water main and the excavation has been restored. The closed portion of US-31 has been plowed and salted and is back open to traffic. There are no lane closures and the detour has been removed.
A water main break had closed a portion of US-31 in Manistee due to the cold temperatures.
US-31 was closed between Lakeshore and Monroe Street in Manistee for most of the day Wednesday. A detour was set up in the area.
According to Director of Public Safety Dave Bachman, the water main break was detected adjacent to the Arthur Street boat launch, Stefano's restaurant and the Grand Rental Station. It was detected at 7:20am.
Water department crews were on the scene determining the damage.
â??When we get into these deep freeze cycles as the frost penetrates deep in the ground it actually causes the soil to move, impacts the pipes so it's not uncommon for water main breaks to happen in these deep freezes,â?? said Jeff Mikula, Manistee Department of Public Works Director. â??This time of year makes it particularly difficult to locate all the valves, thaw them outâ?| and close them. So we've exercised valves in the near vicinity and were able to reduce the water but not completely shut it off.â??
The Department of Public Works did not shut off water to homes and businesses while they were making repairs.
Once crews removed all the water from the six foot hole dug to reach the water main, they were able begin the repair job.
â??We clean the pipe on the outside and we utilize a stainless steel repair clamp. Once that's on you simply tighten it down and it's pretty common practice for a repair."
