Wexford County still determining budget for new jail facility
WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Wexford County jail is nearly complete, but exactly how much it's going to cost is still being determined.
Right now Wexford County is finalizing their budget, and they have the jail budgeted for more than 2 million dollars for 2018.
That's about $500,000 more than the old jail which Wexford County would be taking out of the general fund.
But the Wexford County Clerk says they should be making up that up by not having to transport inmates to other jails since they now are big enough to keep everyone in the county.
“It's a much bigger facility,” said Wexford County Clerk Elaine Richardson. “Our current jail houses 32 prisoners this one will house 158 prisoners. Quite a big difference. It will be a learning experience for everyone, for our corrections officers, everyone because it's new.”
Richardson says the jail will be open in November, and the county board is set to be approving their budget around that same time.
