Woman sentenced to prison for manslaughter after death of her father

Jessica was sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison with credit for 190 days already served. As part of her sentencing, she can't have any contact with Brian.

KALKASKA COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A woman charged with torturing and murdering her father will spend time behind bars.

Jessica Degroot and her husband Brian were arrested for killing Michael Brandt in Kalkaska County.

Jessica pleaded guilty to manslaughter back in July.

Jessica was sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison with credit for 190 days already served. As part of her sentencing, she can't have any contact with Brian.

Brian was also in court Tuesday on multiple motions. His next court date has not yet been set.

Deputies say Brian and Jessica stabbed 54-year-old Michael Brandt to death at his home in Springfield Township in January.

Detectives testified that Brian Degroot admitted to stabbing Brandt three times after Brandt verbally threatened him.

Detectives said they found multiple weapons in a burn barrel at the Degroot's home, including an ax blade, a bolt for a crossbow and a kitchen knife.

Vincent Roys told the court he hadn't heard from his friend in several days, and when to check on him. That's when he found a body wrapped up in a carpet.

"I picked a piece of the carpet up, and I looked, there was feet and there was a body in there," Roys said. "Then I walked to the other end and pulled it back and I realized it was Mike, then I walked outside and called 911."
