Work site accident lands man in a hole, then hospital

An afternoon work site accident resulted in a Clare County man falling into a hole. He was rushed to the hospital with a possible head injury.

A 52 year old man was rushed to Midland Hospital after suffering a work site accident near M-61 and Kirby Ave around 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon. According to the Clare County Sheriff's Office, the man was working on digging up a metal gate that was cemented in the ground. A co-worker was operating a backhoe to help free the gate, when the man lost his footing and fell into a hole that was being dug.

The co-worker called 911, and told dispatchers that the fallen man was having difficulty breathing and was bleeding from his ear. The sheriff's office says the co-worker was able to provide life saving medical attention until an ambulance arrived. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

An investigation into the accident is currently underway by both the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Clare County Sheriff's Department.
