A 43-year-old man allegedly sexually assaulted a 12 and 13-year-old girl at a campsite along Pere Marquette River on Saturday evening in Custer Township.
According to the Mason County Sheriff's Office, the girls flagged down a DNR Conservation Officer around 4:48 p.m. on Cable road near Cluster road. The two girls from southern Michigan tell the officer that they were allegedly being touched by the suspect.
The suspect, identified as William Joseph Stempien of Coldwater, was found by a second deputy at the Scottville Boat Launch. Deputies found hydrocodone pills on the suspect and arrested him.
Stempien has been charged with one count of 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of 4th degree criminal sexual conduct, as well as possession of analogues.
Stempien was released after posting a $50,000 cash/surety bond.
