BANGOR, Mich. (WWMT) – More controversy is hitting the Bangor school system.

On the same day two teachers resigned after video of school employees making inappropriate comments about students went viral, new video has surfaced of a Bangor High School teacher duct taping a student in class and there is now a criminal investigation underway.

The school system confirmed that a teacher resigned Tuesday after admitting to duct taping a 16-year-old student in his desk.

Police say the boy felt embarrassed and wants the teacher to be prosecuted.

The video, taken by a student, shows the Bangor High School chemistry teacher wrapping a 16-year-old boy in duct tape during class on Monday.

“He uses his hands a lot to gesture when he’s talking,” said Bangor Police Chief Tommy Simpson of the student, “during the time he described what we did this weekend, the teacher grabbed duct tape and began to put it around the upper part of his arms and his body.”

The student who captured the video says the student sitting behind hi helped the teacher put duct tape on his classmate.

Chief Simpson says a student first showed him a picture of the incident at Monday night’s school board meeting. The chief says the school system asked him to look into it on Tuesday and he interviewed the teacher in question.

“She did admit to putting duct tape around the student,” said Chief Simpson. “She said something about his arm movements being a distraction and resulting in time loss.”

The chief says the teacher claims it was meant to be a joke, but it was no laughing matter for the student, who the chief says was embarrassed by the whole ordeal, which lasted several minutes.

“Said he was upset over it, says he started poking holes in it,” said Chief Simpson. “Then the teacher eventually helped him get it off.”

The student’s family is now asking police to forward the case to the prosecutor.

“Did an assault occur, they’re gonna want to know that, or are they just going to let this sit with the administration from the school,” said Chief Simpson.

Newschannel 3 was told by several students that the teacher who used duct tape on the student was also involved in the video that featured Bangor teachers talking inappropriately about students.

Officials have not confirmed that information and declined to identify any of the teachers involved.
